Maya Ruins, Science, and Culture in Guatemala
Led by Anthropologist Dr. Heather Teague
Arranged for Professor Scott Dorman
Birmingham Southern College

This two week travel course is designed for students of varying levels to explore ancient Maya civilzation, meet their modern descendants and participate in a variety of scientific field projects. The course will begin and end in Guatemala City, starting with an overview of ancient Maya culture through lectures and museum visits. The first half of the course will take place in the humid jungles of the north, in the Peten Rainforest. During day trips to the ruins and evening lectures the students will learn intensively about ancient Maya history, mathematics, and astronomy. The second half of the course will travel through the Guatemalan Highlands, where students will meet modern Maya people, learn about their lives and the social challenges they face as indigenous people.
