Art Replication and Architectural Reconstruction Studies
The ancient Maya created beautiful works of art in ceramic, stone and modeled stucco, oftentimes painted in brilliant colors and
with great precision. For the last 8 years MEC's chief artist Alonso Mendez has been conducting replication studies of
ancient Maya art.
Through the study of pottery clay composition and analysis of forms he has been able to create faithful reproductions of some
of the Palenque's most complex ceramic pieces. He has also been working in stucco to replicate some of Palenque's modeled
stucco panels. His drawings of the stone carved images and hieroglyphic texts are the products of detailed study and provide
an essential record of these deteriorating objects.
