Maya Exploration Center: Education Through Exploration
Journey Through the Ancient Maya Kingdom of Calakmul

A Tour led by Archaeologist Miguel Covarrubias

This one week adventure will take its participants through the ancient Maya kingdom of Calakmul, known as the Snake Kingdom. Though Calakmul was possibly the mightiest of all the ancient Maya city-states, its remote location makes tours to its ruins rare. MEC's tour will be led by renowned Mexican archaeologist Miguel Covarrubias, an expert in the region. It will begin in the city of Chetumal, just above the Belize border in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Starting with a visit to Dzinache, the Snake Kingdom's first capital, the tour will move west through the "Maya Baroque" ruins of the Chenes region on their way to Calakmul. Spending the night in the closest by eco-lodge, the team will strike out at dawn for a full day at the massive metropolis, climbing its tallest pyramids. Day five of the tour will feature a visit to the little known and unbelievable stucco facade sculptures of Balam Ku and continue on to the city of Campeche for the evening. The next morning will begin with a tour of the many Calakmul artifacts displayed in Campeche before heading up to Muna for a visit to the famous workshop of ceramic artist Patricia Martin. The tour's final day will be spent in colorful Merida, exploring its Gran Museo Maya and markets before enjoying a final dinner together.
